Each of the 6 different types of maps available in LinkSViewer allows you to investigate and view a network in a different way. In some maps different nodes are shown, and in some maps the links that connect the nodes are representing different relationships. Below you can find each map type and the types of nodes and links that can be found within it. Click on the "learn more" link next to the title of any map type to see an in-depth look at that map type with images of a sample network.

Relational Map   learn more »
Nodes:

Links:

The Relational Map can contain all of the different types of nodes - Investors, Companies, and People. You can see in the legend that there are three colors of Company nodes, but each color has two possible shades. The darker shade is for active companies, and the lighter shade is for inactive companies, so there are 6 different Company nodes in all. However, the default setting is to include active companies only in all of the LinkSViewer maps. If you want to include the inactive companies, you may choose to do so in any map by using the Company Filters.

The green links represent the flow of money, connecting Investors to their investments (Company nodes). The purple links represent current Management Team members, connecting the Person nodes to the Companies they worked for. The red links represent current Board Members, connecting the Person nodes to the Companies on whose Boards they sat. There are three types of red links representing the three different Board positions that a person can occupy. Outside Board Members (solid line) are most common, but Advisory Board Members (dashed line) and Board Observers (dotted line) can also appear.

If a Person served formerly as a Management Team Member or Board Member but is no longer in that position, the link is represented by a lighter shade than the current version. The former Management team link is light purple instead of dark purple, and the former Board Member link is light pink instead of darker red. These former relationships are not displayed by default, but you can choose to display them using the Person Filters.

Investment Map   learn more »
Nodes:

Links:

The Investment Map is a variation on the Relational Map. It can also contain all of the different types of nodes - Investors, Companies, and People. However, this map focuses on the investment relationships in the network (green links). Depending on what kind of target nodes are used to construct a given network map, this map will automatically include or exclude portions of the network in order to offer a clear view of the investment structures.

With this map type it is often interesting to set the MinLink to "1" and "1,2" to see what those versions of the investment map reveal. Click here to learn more about how the MinLink is affecting the map

People Map   learn more »
Nodes:

Links:

The People Map is a variation on the Relational Map. It can also contain all of the different types of nodes - Investors, Companies, and People. However, this map focuses on the personnel relationships in the network (red and purple links). Depending on what kind of target nodes are used to construct a given network map, this map will automatically include or exclude portions of the network in order to offer a clear view of the personnel relationship structures based on connections formed by management team members and board members.

With this map type it is often interesting to set the MinLink to "1" and "1,2" to see what those versions of the investment map reveal. Click here to learn more about how the MinLink is affecting the map

Board Map   learn more »
Nodes:

Links:

The Board Map is a variation on the Relational Map. It is very similar to the People Map described above, but this map focuses specifically on the relationships in the network formed by board members (red links). Depending on what kind of target nodes are used to construct a given network map, this map will automatically include or exclude portions of the network in order to offer a clear view of the relationship structures based on connections formed by board members.

If a Person served formerly as a Board Member but is no longer in that position, the link is represented by a lighter shade of red. These former relationships are not displayed by default, but you can choose to display them using the Person Filters.

With this map type it is often interesting to set the MinLink to "1" and "1,2" to see what those versions of the investment map reveal. Click here to learn more about how the MinLink is affecting the map.

Management Map   learn more »

Links:

The Management Map is a variation on the Relational Map. It is very similar to the People Map described above, but this map focuses specifically on the relationships in the network formed by management team members (purple links). Depending on what kind of target nodes are used to construct a given network map, this map will automatically include or exclude portions of the network in order to offer a clear view of the relationship structures based on connections formed by management team members.

If a Person served formerly on a management team, but is no longer in that position, the link is represented by a lighter shade of purple. These former relationships are not displayed by default, but you can choose to display them using the Person Filters.

With this map type it is often interesting to set the MinLink to "1" and "1,2" to see what those versions of the investment map reveal. Click here to learn more about how the MinLink is affecting the map.

Company Map
Nodes:

Links:

The Company Map can potentially contain six types of nodes, including the inactive (lighter shade) versions for each of the three types of Companies. However, by default only the active companies are included, limiting the Company Map to three potential node types.

The yellow links connect two companies that share investors in common. The red links connect two companies that share Person affiliations in common, whether they be as Board Members or Management Team Members. The orange links connect two companies that share a combination of investors and Person affiliations in common. The minimum number of common affiliations necessary in order to constitute a link is adjustable with the MinLink feature. For all three link colors, the thickness of the link corresponds to the total number of shared affiliations that it represents, getting slightly thicker for each additional commonality up to 8. Any link for 8 or more shared affiliations is the same thickness.

Investor Map
Nodes:

Links:

The Investor Map can only contain the three types of Investors nodes (Individual, Venture Capital, and Corporate).

There is only one type of link in the Investor Map. It is blue, and it represents that the two connected investors share investments in common. The minimum number of common affiliations necessary in order to constitute a link is adjustable with the MinLink feature. The thickness of the link corresponds to the number of investments shared by the Investor nodes, up to 8. Each additional shared investment greater than 8 does not further increase the thickness of the link.

Person-Investor Map
Nodes:

Links:

The Person-Investor Map contains two types of nodes, the Person nodes and the Investor nodes. This map is basically an amalgam of the Person Map with the Investor Map, but with the addition of new Derived Links that connect Person nodes to Investor nodes if the Person has an affiliation with at least two companies into which the investor has made an investment. The minimum number of common affiliations necessary in order to constitute a link is adjustable with the MinLink feature.

There are three link types in the Person-Investor Map. The violet links are the same as in the Person Map, connecting two Person nodes that share affiliations with the same companies. The blue links are the same as in the Investor Map, connecting two Investor nodes that share investments in the same Companies. The gray links connect Person nodes to Investor nodes if the Person has affiliations with Companies into which the Investor has made an investment. The thickness of the links corresponds to the number of common affiliations that the nodes share, up to 8. Each additional affiliation greater than 8 does not further increase the thickness of the link.
